I chose a shaded pool on a quiet stretch of stream for the first outing of my new bamboo 5-wt. rod. Gentle casts off a black sponge spider beside a submerged log and quivering imparted action produced a violent strike. The hook set prompted a head-shaking leap followed by a bull-dogging attempt to return to its cover. Finally, following four more memorable leaps, a moment of admiration culminated in its release. I think I’m going to like this rod.
