Constant rains have confined my fishing to ponds. The bluegill population is still in pre-spawn here, and males are defending their nesting sites aggressively. Egg-ripened females have moved onto the deep edges of the flats. Sponge spiders receive splashy hits when twitched above the guarded nests and Bully’s Bluegill Spiders are inhaled as they are stripped along the deep edges. In the last two hours before sunset 36 brightly-colored males put a deep throbbing bend in my 3-wt. before being captured and released.
