Grasshoppers spraying along the path to the pond are a sure sign of late summer/almost fall in our part of the world. The fly of choice last evening was a size-8 Muddler Minnow knotted to 4X tippet and treated with floatant. the first cast triggered an explosive strike from a 15-inch largemouth bass that leaped three times before being netted and released. Fish-catching was consistent until dark. Every weedline’s pocket seemed to harbor a bass or big bluegill. The trip’s last cast was met by yet another firm take that resulted in a broken tippet. It might have been the best fish of the day.
